Reminder: There will be school on Saturday, December 13, 2025; it is the makeup day for the weather cancellation on Halloween. There will be a 1:30 P.M. release.
We will have a 1.5 hour late start today. The blowing snow and high wind are creating near-zero visibility and high drifts. School will begin at 10:30 A.M. Breakfast will not be served.
👏Huge congratulations to our 2025 ASAA/First National Bank Alaska Mix Six/2A Volleyball State winners!
🥈 Golovin Lynx: 2nd Place Overall
🥉 Shaktoolik Wolverines: 3rd Place Overall & Sportsmanship Award Winner!
👏 Well done to both teams!"

It looks like hand, foot, and mouth disease is back. To ensure that we do not have a major outbreak in the school again this year, please keep your child home if they have sores around their mouth or on their hands/feet. Once the sores go away (typically 7-10 days), they can return to school if they are symptom-free (no new sores or fever) for 24 hours.
🏆Congratulations🏆

Saturday School that was originally planned for November 15 has been changed to December 13.
Reminder: We will have school this Saturday, November 15, 2025 to make up for the no school day on October 31, 2025. This will be a 1:30 P.M. dismissal day.
There will be NO SCHOOL today due to high winds, blowing snow, and ice. Enjoy your long weekend.
The Halloween Carnival is being moved to November 7, 2025. The date change is for two reasons:
1. The weather has potential to be very poor and dangerous with high winds and blowing snow.
2. Many items that we ordered for the carnival did not arrive on time, so we hope giving it one more week will give them time to get to Savoonga.
The status of school tomorrow is still uncertain. I will post if we are having school or not by 7:00 A.M. tomorrow morning.

There IS SCHOOL today. The landlines are currently down, so if you need to excuse your student due to weather/high winds, text Gaetano, Nuwi, Francine, or me. Have a great day! Thanks.
👏"👏 "A huge congratulations to all the wrestlers and cheerleading participants for their incredible commitment and hard work this season. A special acknowledgment goes to our winners—your dedication truly shone through!" 👏"👏"

Open campus during lunch is being shut down for the rest of this week. We had 20 students late to fourth period yesterday because they were late coming back from lunch. That causes too much disruption to the classroom learning environment. I will open it again on Monday and see if the tardiness improves. If you want your child to come home during lunch this week, you will have to come sign them out like you would any other time during the school day. Thanks.
Reminder: The monthly AEC meeting will be tonight at 6:00 P.M. in the library. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Sorry for the late notice, but the AEC meeting scheduled for tonight has been moved to Monday at 6 PM due to the basketball tournament.
For those parents who want to go to the airport to see their children off, the plane should arrive from Unalakleet at 2:55 P.M. today.
Temporary Change to Community Gym Access
Dear Community Members,
Our school has always valued providing open gym time as a safe, positive space for students, families, and community members to gather and enjoy recreation together. Unfortunately, despite the warning posted on the school’s Facebook on October 4, 2025, and several reminders about expectations for respectful adult behavior, there have continued to be incidents that disrupt our intended environment. In these past two weeks alone, the following have been reported:
• Adults arguing/pushing/fighting with students on the basketball court.
• Adults arguing/pushing/fighting with other adults on the basketball court.
• Adults assaulting students in the locker room.
• Adults providing illegal substances to students on school premises.
• Adults under the influence of illegal drugs during open gym.
• Adults intoxicated during open gym.
• Vandalism of school facilities and property by adults.
Because these warnings have been ignored, we will be restricting community access to STUDENTS ONLY until Monday, October 27, 2025. During this time, we will review our supervision plan and determine how to ensure that open gym remains a place where everyone feels welcome and safe.
I want to encourage everyone to do better; if not for yourselves, at least for your children and your community. Students in Savoonga argue and fight far too often because that is what is modeled for them. Students in Savoonga vape, chew, drink, and take drugs far too frequently because the adults in their lives not only model those things, but often provide the illegal substances as well.
It is not my job to change adult behavior in Savoonga. It IS MY JOB to make sure that when students walk into the school for any reason, they are exposed to self-regulated adults who are able to speak and act appropriately. I take this responsibility seriously.
I understand that this decision will disappoint many who have followed the rules and helped make community access and open gym successful. Please know that this step is temporary and intended to protect the integrity of the program so that it can continue into the future. When adult access resumes, we will expect full cooperation with all behavioral requirements moving forward. Thank you for your understanding and commitment to maintaining a positive community space for our students.

The phones are currently down at the school. The district office is working on restoring service. If you need to excuse your child, please call later today.
We will have a one and one-half (1.5) hour delay this morning to see if these winds calm down. I don't think our little ones will be safe walking/riding to school in these conditions. I will reassess at 9:30 A.M. for a possible 10:30 A.M. start time. As always, if we do have school and you feel travel is unsafe, call Nuwi to excuse your children. Please use the north doors when you arrive because there are loose roof tiles above the south doors. I hope to see you all at 10:30 A.M.
