BSSD FabLabs Create PPEFor the past five years, Bering Strait School District has planned, piloted, and expanded our Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab) aka MakerSpace programs across the district in order to leverage resources and provide instruction that develop 21st century skills in our students that are relevant, current and industry applicable.  We are now taking our Career and Technology Education programs to the front line in the global fight against COVID-19. Our staff from the Chukchi Sea across the Seward Peninsula and on to St. Lawrence Island are in various stages of producing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for our region in consultation with Norton Sound Health Corporation. Face Shield PPE devices that use a standard office supply transparency film for the barrier and several facemask designs are being test printed.  Several versions have been further tested for producibility and usability and reviewed by NSHC staff electronically and by donning prototypes. Many hands across the district are working in separate togetherness sewing traditional cloth facemask PPE for use in our communities and across the region. Our students and their families are ever present with our Bering Strait education family as we do this work and until they return to us they can share in the feeling of hope and pride that Bering Strait School District is contributing to the fight against COVID-19 and positively impacting the safety and wellness of our people.
