Vadim Yenan of Savoonga Honored for Excellence in MathematicsVadim Yenan is the recipient of First Annual Eric Lowry Memorial Scholarship, given by the Alaska Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ACTM). Eric Lowry was a long-term ACTM executive board member and spent 18 years of his life as an educator and technology integration facilitator in the Bering Strait School District before his untimely passing in November of 2017. Eric’s days were infused with intentional enthusiasm, random acts of kindness without regard for personal gain, and helping others, simply because they needed it. This annual scholarship is awarded to a rural Alaskan student who displays similar qualities and excellence in technology and / or mathematics.

Vadim was nominated by his math teacher, Brian Klebanski, who stated that, “Vadim always helps others. He makes people laugh when they are sad and provides entertainment when they are bored. Vadim is constantly tutoring his peers in mathematics. He helps out at the student store on a weekly basis. Vadim takes orders, finds totals, and makes change, often while doing magic tricks and telling jokes to the kids in line. Vadim's personality resembles Eric's in many ways. He's always kind and extremely helpful just like Eric was, and he loves math just like Eric did.”
